Contraband meat in the Palermo Market

In the market with a camera, this butcher (macellaio) expressed his disinterest in being photographed.

When I persuaded him I was just a tourist, he showed me his chops.

(easy pun, maybe that's why I don't get paid for this)

Why is the meat in the photo considered to be " Contraband meat"?? Thank you!

I was wondering the same thing. BTW...I noticed on the Expats in Italy site that your fiance' is possibly looking to open his own macelleria in Trapani. Make a post if he does. My husband and I are moving to Marsala at the end of this month, and I would definitely frequent his shop.

Among other things the meat is being butchered on a tree stump!

No macelleria in Trapani. WE are still in the midst of planning our next move.

thanks for the comments!
